Restricted Parties
U.S. export control regulations prohibit U.S. persons and entities from engaging with certain entities, including persons, academic institutions, governments, companies, or other entities. These entities are referred to as “Restricted Parties.”
Before considering a research or other collaboration, or any exchange of material or information, collaborators should be screened (including individuals, academic institutions, governments, and companies) against the Restricted Party lists. Restricted Party Screening (“RPS”) involves searching these lists for names of individuals, entities, and countries. Because the U.S. Government can impose both civil and criminal penalties for transferring export-controlled items to or transacting with a restricted party, the University of Alabama (UA) conducts RPS on individuals and entities with which UA does business, such as research sponsors, subcontractors, vendors, collaborators, and visiting scholars prior to engagement.
UA uses Descartes Visual Compliance, which queries a number of sanctions lists maintained by the U.S. government. To obtain access to Visual Compliance, please see the instructional document.
