Accelerating University of Alabama startups from the lab to the market.
Through a strategic partnership with gener8tor—one of the world’s top-ranked startup accelerators—the gBETA Innovate UA Program provides faculty, students, and alumni with a high-intensity pathway to turn research and ideas into scalable businesses.
gBETA is a concierge pre-accelerator program designed specifically for “gold-medal” UA startups. By embedding a dedicated, locally based Program Director on campus, gBETA provides the structured coaching, investor network, and mentorship needed to bridge the gap between academic discovery and venture-ready growth.
- Individualized Coaching: Participants engage in weekly one-on-one meetings with the Program Director to set milestones, refine business models, and execute on growth strategies tailored to their specific technology.
- Mentor Swarms: Teams are introduced to a “swarm” of mentors, including successful entrepreneurs, industry experts, and venture capitalists, providing a massive influx of feedback and network connections in a short window.
- Investor Readiness: gBETA focuses on the mechanics of fundraising, helping founders develop a compelling pitch deck, understand term sheets, and learn how to navigate the venture capital landscape.
- Pitch Night: Each cohort culminates in a high-profile “Pitch Night,” where founders present their companies to an audience of investors, community leaders, and the UA innovation ecosystem.
The Program: gBETA
gBETA is a free, seven-week, no-equity program. Because gener8tor does not take equity, their sole focus is on the success of the UA teams. The program is competitive, selecting five high-potential startups per cohort to ensure each team receives the concierge attention required to move the needle. Throughout the program, participants will connect with 55+ individuals, including approximately 30 mentors and 25 investors.
Who Should Apply?
- Faculty & Researchers: Transitioning a lab-proven technology into a commercial venture.
- Student Entrepreneurs: Graduate or undergraduate students with a scalable business model.
- Alumni: UA graduates looking to plug back into the university’s innovation ecosystem.
Building the Pipeline
The gener8tor partnership is a key component of UA’s participation in the NSF Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program. While gBETA focuses on teams ready to launch, we are committed to building a sustainable, campus-wide engine for innovation.
Future expansions of the program may include gALPHA, a venture-creation workshop designed to help researchers “harvest” ideas and form teams before they are ready for a full accelerator.
Apply Now
Applications for the next gBETA cohort are now open. We are looking for founders with a deep commitment to their technology and a desire to scale their impact.
