Astound Program: Fractional Funding & Commercialization Strategy

Bridging the gap between lab-proven research and market-ready ventures.

The Innovate UA Program has partnered with Astound Research Inc, a Birmingham-based organization to launch the Astound Program at The University of Alabama. Astound provides an intensive, hands-on framework for faculty-led ventures to navigate the “valley of death” between academic discovery and commercial viability. While UA’s research enterprise has seen significant growth over the past decade, the Astound Program is specifically designed to translate that growth into measurable commercial output.

By serving as a fractional funding officer, Astound works alongside high-potential research teams through sustained, weekly engagement to build a multi-year strategy for success.

Fundability Assessment & Strategy

Astound evaluates your technology across technical maturity, market demand, and funding fit to build a prioritized plan mapping your development timeline to specific federal and private programs.

Narrative Development

Astound sharpens your technology story—defining the unmet need, technical differentiation, and the commercial case—to ensure reviewers, program officers, and partners understand why your innovation matters now.

Strategic Grant Positioning

Astound develops submittable, complete proposals—including specific aims, significance, and innovation sections—tailored to the specific review criteria of agencies like the NIH, NSF, DOD, and DOE.

Collaborator & Partner Recruitment

Astound identifies and connects you with the people who strengthen your position: academic researchers with complementary expertise, industry partners, clinical advisors, and key opinion leaders.

Commercial Feasibility

Astound pressure-tests market assumptions, regulatory timelines, competitive dynamics, and go-to-market strategy—so the commercial case holds up under scrutiny from funders and investors alike.

Sustained Weekly Engagement

Most consultants provide a list of grants and disappear. Astound provides deep, continuous support to position each venture for non-dilutive funding, industry partnerships, and long-term commercialization.

Why Astound?

The program prioritizes depth over breadth. Rather than offering surface-level programming to a large audience, Astound works closely with a small number of faculty members (4–5 per cycle) with commercially promising technologies who are ready to form and launch a company.

Astound focuses on UA’s core research strengths, including:

  • Power & Energy Systems (battery reuse, edge AI, power electronics)
  • Advanced Materials & Aerospace (metallic alloys and composites)
  • Clean Energy & Sustainability (hydrogen production, biofuels, solar)
  • Water Resources & Environmental Technology (groundwater management, hydrologic forecasting, ecological systems monitoring)
  • AI & Data Science (knowledge graphs, wearable sensor analytics, neuroimaging)
  • Biomedical Devices & Sensors (wearable health monitoring)

Get Involved

Are you a faculty member with a technology ready for the next step? The Astound Program is looking for researchers willing to engage in an intensive process to change the trajectory of their commercial impact.
