Undergraduate Research Spotlight: Chandni Bhat

In addition to being a Randall Research Scholar and a DAAD RISE Germany participant, Chandni Bhat is one of our very own Research Ambassadors.

She began her research journey approximately two and a half years ago in Dr. Elizabeth Papish’s lab, where she currently investigates ruthenium-ligand complexes as potential anti-cancer compounds, utilizing light to activate and distinguish cancer cells. This was only the beginning for Chandni, as she soon took on another project with Dr. Papish, participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UAB, and worked overseas in Germany with DAAD RISE.

Chandni encourages students to explore new opportunities and step out of their comfort zones. Her diverse research experiences have reshaped her career outlook, particularly her time abroad, where she gained a new perspective on work-life balance. Chandni emphasizes the importance of self-care and following your own path: “You have your whole life ahead of you, so I don’t understand the rush. Do what you want to do, and if it takes longer, it takes longer.” As a Pre-Med student on the MD/PhD track, Chandni is taking a gap year to explore other opportunities and ensure this path aligns with her interests.

Chandni has returned to her work at the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) after an exciting summer. As a Research Ambassador, she connects students with research opportunities both within and across departments. Chandni notes that her role as a Research Ambassador has improved her communication skills and her ability to collaborate with others.
