Cecilia Cordell

Undergraduate Research Spotlight: Cecilia Cordell

Cecilia is a junior from Atlanta, GA, double majoring in economics and finance. She is also in the Accelerated Master’s Program for economics.

What got you started in undergraduate research?

In high school I took AP Research which allowed me to create my own research project. The ability to create a question and then be able to find the answer myself, creating new information I could share with others was something that made me want to continue research in college. Through Culverhouse I joined the Faculty Scholars Program first semester freshman year where I was matched with a professor to begin research.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working under Dr. Ross in the economics department on property taxes within the state of Alabama. We are looking at how the lower property taxes in the state affects people’s enrollment within the state, connecting this issue to segregation academies.

How does participating in research align with your future career goals?

I am currently set to intern with JP Morgan this summer where I will be an equity research intern. Although this is not research in academic terms, I still will use all of the same analytical skills and curiosity that I do in research in this role as well.

What advice would you give a student considering going into research?

I would highly recommend participating in research! Even if you are not planning on pursuing a career in research, it allows you to connect with faculty, understand the application of what you learn in the classroom, as well as a great resume builder.

Who is your mentor and how did you get connected with them?

Dr. Amanda Ross in the economics department. When viewing the research database I found some of her work interesting so reached out through email. I am currently one of many research ambassadors on campus; all with many different majors and interests who would love to assist you in this process as well!

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am involved in the Capstone Asset Management Society, Women Talk Wealth, the Manderson Specialized Masters Association, and as a Research Ambassador.
