Ruggiano Named to APLU Council on Research (COR) Research Leader Fellows

Dr. Nicole Ruggiano, professor and associate dean for research in the School of Social Work, has been named a Research Leader Fellow by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Council on Research.

The COR Research Leader Fellowship is a year-long leadership development program designed to prepare emerging university research leaders for senior roles. Through immersive site visits, mentorship from experienced research executives, and participation in COR meetings, fellows broaden their expertise across a wide range of research support functions.

As associate dean, Ruggiano supports faculty and students in securing external research funding, building interdisciplinary collaborations, and managing complex projects. She also leads research communication initiatives like Impact Magazine for the School of Social Work.

During the fellowship, Ruggiano will develop research security training programs focused on the challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence.

“I am honored to be selected as a Research Leader Fellow for the APLU,” Ruggiano said. “As a social worker, I bring a unique perspective to research administration and leadership that emphasizes collaboration and translating research into meaningful societal impact. This fellowship will allow me to bridge disciplines and develop security frameworks that work for researchers across all fields.”

As a researcher, Ruggiano blends STEM with social and health sciences to develop and test technologies that support people living with dementia and their families. She is committed to translating research into real-world impact by sharing her expertise and findings to shape patient care, improve service delivery, and influence public policy related to aging and healthcare.

Her selection by APLU reflects her continued commitment to research leadership, innovation, and integrity. She was previously named an SEC Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow for her dedicated leadership at UA.

Ruggiano joins the eighth cohort of COR Fellows, which includes eight research leaders from institutions across the country. She will be formally recognized at the 2025 Joint COR-CGA Summer Meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in July.
