Schwindt Named Assistant Vice President for Research Finance

The Office for Research & Economic Development has named Dr. Julie Schwindt assistant vice president for research finance, effective February 24.

Reporting to Jennifer Camp, senior associate vice president for research administration, Schwindt will lead the Office for Contract and Grant Accounting, which oversees all post-award accounting and the financial management of externally sponsored projects. She will also guide financial strategy and operations for the University’s research enterprise, including institutional reporting, post-award compliance, training and education.

Schwindt brings more than two decades of experience in research administration, financial management, and compliance. She joins The University of Alabama from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she served as director of post-award accounting, responsible for research administration financial management functions.

Prior to UMMC, Schwindt served as associate vice president at the University of South Alabama, where she led University-wide financial operations, including post-award accounting and student financial services. She has also held positions at North Carolina State University, Augusta University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“Julie’s expertise in post-award accounting and research finance make her a tremendous asset to UA,” said Camp. “Her leadership will be essential in elevating our financial infrastructure and advancing our research mission. We are pleased to welcome her to the team.”

Schwindt joins the University at a pivotal time, as sponsored funding reached a record $269.9 million in fiscal year 2024. ORED also recently launched a five-year strategic plan outlining its vision for the future of UA research.

Schwindt earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as a doctorate in instructional design and organizational effectiveness from the University of South Alabama. She is a Certified Research Administrator, Certified Financial Research Administrator, and Certified Public Accountant.
