Research ASSIST Office

Small Grant Program

The Research Grants Committee (RGC) reviews proposals for internal grants each year from UA full-time tenured, tenured track, clinical and clinical track faculty to receive funding from the Office for Research & Economic Development Small Grant Program in three areas:

  • Area A – Physical and Biological Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering
  • Area B – Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Area C – Arts and Humanities

For general program information, eligibility, due dates, and how to apply, please refer to the FY2024 Application Manual. In addition to the Application Manual, additional resources include a budget template and a checklist. The sample proposal only provides basic information as each submission will be unique. Proposals will be submitted using Cayuse SP.

How to Apply

Only one proposal, as PI or co-PI, will be considered per investigator during any proposal submission period. An individual can have support for only one ORED SGP project at a time (whether it is a single or joint application).

Former ORED Small Grant recipients are ineligible to receive new Small Grant Program funding for 12 months (one year) following the end of the previous award period for the same level of funding. For example, previous ORED SGP or RGC recipients must wait 12 months from the end date of their project to apply for Small Grant Program funding. The 12-month hiatus does not apply to other ORED internal funding programs that were for larger awards. The 12-month period begins at the end of the project period and includes ORED-approved extensions if applicable.

Reporting

A final report is required 90 days after the close of the grant. All reporting should be completed using the ORED Internal Funding Final Report Form.

Final reports (generally 1-2 pages in length) must include a synopsis of the proposed project, outcomes expected at the time of submission, a description of how the project resulted in furthering the research or scholarship mission of The University of Alabama and the faculty member and/or resulted in additional extramural support.

Details on completed and anticipated required deliverables such as exhibitions, publications, presentations, performances, external submissions, awards, etc. as described in the Application Manual from the awarding year should be detailed in the report.

Faculty Research Day Poster

As mentioned in the above section on reporting, there are expected deliverables for receiving ORED Small Grant Program funding. One deliverable is a poster at Faculty Research Day During the final year of funding. This event is typically held in April. To assist you in making a poster, Research ASSIST provides two template options, either a 3-Column or a 4-Column format. Awardees will be notified of the need for a poster for Faculty Research Day.
