Undergraduate Research

Becoming an Emerging Scholar

Program Requirements

The Emerging Scholars Program is a two-semester, two-to-four-elective-credit-hour opportunity for any undergraduate student to get involved with research (application required).

  • UA 155: (1 credit hour) Learn the fundamentals and methods of research. Explore different research opportunities available for you to participate in on campus as your research experience in UA 156.
  • UA 156: (1-3 credit hours) Work with a research mentor to do research on campus. Students will work with UA 155/UA 156 instructors to find a research mentor that is in their chosen field.
  • Once an Emerging Scholar has completed a research project, they will present at the next Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference (URCA).

Why ESP?

One defining characteristic of ESP is its dedication to the students who take part in it. From their first day on campus, Emerging Scholars can turn to the program’s instructors or the network of current and former Scholars for support and information. They have guidance during every stage of ESP while also developing the skills and confidence to succeed in a professional setting.

ESP includes students of all majors and interests. Over the years, Emerging Scholars have been involved in research in nearly every department on campus. Many Emerging Scholars work with their faculty mentors until graduation, developing a relationship that is often a valuable part of an Emerging Scholar’s time at The University of Alabama.

Apply

The priority deadline for the Fall 2024 cohort is April 1, 2024. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the course is full.
